Resumo
O artigo apresenta e discute as teses centrais da teoria da cultura política, concentrando-se sobre suas proposições acerca das complexas relações existentes entre as orientações subjetivas individuais e as instituições políticas. Inicialmente são expostos os argumentos centrais da primeira tentativa de formulação sistemática do programa de pesquisas culturalista, produzida por Almond e Verba na obra The Civic Culture. Na seqüencia são analisadas as principais críticas endereçadas a essa primeira geração de estudos, sobretudo, aquela que questiona a relação de causalidade entre cultura e estruturas políticas. Por fim, através da apresentação de teses propostas por estudos recentes, novos argumentos sobre essa questão controversa são apresentados com o objetivo de afirmar a complementaridade entre fatores subjetivos e institucionais na produção de explicações consistentes para os complexos processos de democratização contemporâneos.
