Abstract
The article presents and discusses the central theses of the theory of political culture, focusing on its propositions about the complex relations existing between individual subjective orientations and political institutions. Initially, the central arguments of the first attempt to systematically formulate the culturalist research program, produced by Almond and Verba in The Civic Culture, are exposed. Next, the main criticisms addressed to this first generation of studies are analyzed, above all, the one that questions the causal relationship between culture and political structures. Finally, through the presentation of theses proposed by recent studies, new arguments on this controversial issue are presented in order to affirm the complementarity between subjective and institutional factors in the production of consistent explanations for the complex processes of contemporary democratization.
