Resumo
O artigo analisa as características do sistema de proteção social do Reino Unido e seu efeito sobre o mercado de trabalho. Foi o primeiro país a conhecer os efeitos perversos do capitalismo não regulado. Após a II Guerra Mundial, o Estado de bem-estar social avançou no atendimento de necessidades fundamentais dos indivíduos. A partir da década de 1970, o sistema de proteção social começou a retroceder. Esse retrocesso atingiu seu auge depois de 2008, quando o país foi atingido por uma crise financeira (e uma crise migratória) e iniciou os preparativos para a saída do projeto de integração regional europeu. A análise mostrou que a austeridade na política econômica e o enfraquecimento da política social (e a menor articulação entre tais políticas), depois de 2008, tiveram sérias consequências. O aumento do emprego e a redução do desemprego foram acompanhados por deterioração das condições de trabalho e aumento de empregos precários (com baixa remuneração e menores garantias).
