Resumo
Muitos dos temas que acompanham Tanizaki Junichiro estão já presentes no conto Shisei, publicado em 1910. Um deles é o jogo entre um ser interior e um exterior, que, na forma de um embrulho, modifica a aparência e transforma profundamente o primeiro. Em Shisei, o embrulho é a tatuagem cuja inscrição na pele de uma jovem é decisiva para que ela vá de uma tímida maiko a uma poderosa e autoconfiante cortesã. Mais do que um processo normal de amadurecimento, o que ela experimenta é uma transformação no papel de gênero que ocupa naquela sociedade - transformação materializada na tatuagem, cujas características formais a aproximam do masculino, e na sua passagem de um lugar passivo a um ativo dentro da narrativa.
