Resumo
As populações pré-industriais da Europa Ocidental apresentaram taxas de mortalidade infantil e pós-infantil extremamente altas (Vries 1991, p. 263). Famílias pobres ou ricas habitualmente perdiam seus filhos desde o nascimento ou ainda nos primeiros dias de vida, devido a malformações congênitas e partos difíceis, mas principalmente na primeira infância, vitimados por doenças, infecções e epidemias (Morel 2004, p. 16). Fomes, guerras e pestes diminuíram tanto a qualidade de vida no norte da Europa no início do período Moderno, que acabaram por reduzir a expectativa de vida no nascimento a apenas 28,4 anos (Vries 1991, p. 263). Sabemos que nos Países Baixos a mortalidade infantil no século XVII foi significantemente maior que no século anterior, particularmente entre 1600 e 1650, comprometendo a própria existência de inúmeras famílias de nobres (Nierop 1993, p. 64). Somente a partir do final do século XVII passa a ocorrer um aumento da expectativa de vida na Europa em geral, correlacionado ao aumento da produtividade agrícola, mas principalmente conexo com a diminuição da virulência de algumas doenças, o desaparecimento virtual da peste bubônica e o desenvolvimento dos primeiros tratamentos de combate a doenças infecciosas como a varíola (Cain & Patterson 2012, p. 76).
