Literary narratives and social distinctions: reflections from the point of view of Pierre Bourdieu

Abstract

The purpose of this text is to start from the theoretical notes of Pierre Bourdieu on social distinction and analyze the short stories “Duzu-Querença” and “Os amores de Kimbá”, written by Conceição Evaristo and published in the book Olhos D´água, in 2016. the investigations that start from the literature help to identify the author's social thinking, his/her position and interest in the context of his/her production. Thus, together with Bourdieu's notes on the types of capital, through the selected stories, we seek to understand how Conceição Evaristo's narratives invest in denunciation writing to raise criticisms about social distinctions, the exclusions provoked, maintenance and the process of dehumanization of its characters that are confused with real stories.
