Abstract
In this paper I consider the way in which progress and religion are related in Condorcet's Sketch for a Historical Picture of the Progress of the Human Mind. Because this work is part of the larger production of the author, references will be made, when necessary, to other studies that contemplate this production and thus contribute to the reflection. I also investigate the much alleged but little researched possibility of finding a millenarian prophecy in Condorcet's vision of history and the future of humanity. This paper could also be read as a reflexive counterpoint on the uses of the concept of "religion" in contemporary Sociology. For if it is true that the thought about our present society could not follow the categories and objects of the Enlightenment it is no less true that those categories and objects contributed to its formation and are still present in the contextual condition of a "sociological tradition".
