The construction of the prostitute as a political subject of rights in the fight against AIDS

Abstract

The question outlined in this article is how, in Brazil, the political autonomy of prostitutes appears restricted to issues related to the AIDS epidemic. The idea of ​​the prostitute as a political subject of rights must be considered taking into account that there is no single conception of female prostitution. Different positions are taken by the same actor who can defend the autonomy of prostitutes at one point and at another, ignore them. This article is the result of field research carried out for the elaboration of my dissertation for the master's degree in Sociology, which is centered on the non-governmental organization of prostitutes Davida. In this text, I consider her as one of the social actors who participate in a collective action aimed at making prostitutes work in the political sphere, with autonomy.
