Abstract
Introduction: The article presents web archiving initiatives adopted in countries from three different continents: North America (United States and Mexico), Europe (France and Portugal), and South America (Chile and Brazil), in order to understand political and technological challenges surrounding the preservation of official websites. Objective: To present the potentialities and barriers of each initiative, as well as to comparatively analyse the current Brazilian situation. The article also details the federal bill no. 2.431/2015, which aims to preserve the information entered on Brazilian official websites. Methodology: It uses historical-documentary research and the case study. Results: As a result, it shows that the United States stands out among the countries analysed with an advanced project of archiving the presidential mandate websites. Brazil, in turn, has no public policy in place to safeguard these media. Conclusion: The research allowed to conclude that the governmental initiatives currently in progress are in different phases of implementation and reach results that are sometimes satisfactory, sometimes insufficient to guarantee the present and future access to governmental websites, which are a privileged source of information about themes of public interest in contemporary democracies. In the Brazilian case, the institutional vacuum on the theme demonstrates the importance of giving more visibility to the subject; of strengthening institutional articulations between governmental and non-governmental players; and of advancing in the approval of a specific legislation that may change this reality.
