Abstract
In dialogue with the article by Clemente Ganz Lucio recently published in BJSLE, two challenges for the Brazilian union movement are discussed: the need to face the ideological impact of neoliberalism and to overcome the limits of the corporatist union structure. These are two necessary conditions to broaden the social base of unions, organizing and mobilizing workers with different contractual relationship. They are also necessary conditions for the development of more organic relations between leadership and rank and file, allowing unions to incorporate new demands, as well as to increase their representativeness and legitimacy by working men and women.
