Abstract

Every visual media representation whose theme deals with some problematic aspect of the reality of the social world has the objective, declared or not, of politicising its viewer. This politicisation contributes to reinforcing or transforming the way in which the represented reality is perceived. The aesthetic formalisation adopted by photographer Sebastião Salgado to construct his visual enunciations brings up the debate on the question of "good" and "bad" ways of politicising the viewer of images, and the social effects produced by these. In this article, we will discuss Salgado's proposed politicisation of photography, the type of politicisation it opposes, and the vision of the world it aims to promote.
