Abstract
The text aims to bring thoughts on the processes of construction of meanings in the song “Paixão e Fé” from a semiotic analysis. Based on the studies of musicologist Philip Tagg (2012), it is intended to highlight the way in which musical codes and the lyrics act together in the development of a multidimensional cultural artifact, the song, whose meaning can be studied from the perspective of the analysis of the complex that involves the work articulated to its historical, social and cultural context. The 1978 phonogram, recorded in the album Clube da Esquina 2, by Milton Nascimento, is compared with other songs belonging to the same historical and musical scene in order to allow the verification of how composers, arrangers and interpreters from the field of Brazilian popular music produced in Minas Gerais mobilized aspects of regional culture in their works, notably Catholic religiosity, in order to represent traces of a cultural identity in the song.
