Abstract

Since its inaugural volume, the theme of rap has been tangent in some articles of Popular Music in Magazine. In the first edition of the magazine, Walter Garcia's article ends by pointing out the rap of Racionais MCs as a form of aesthetic elaboration for a new system of Brazilian popular song. Two editions ahead, the same author examined the rereading of the rap Criolo Doido for the song “Cálice”, by Chico Buarque and Gilberto Gil, bringing discussions about the relations between MPB and rap. Still in that same volume, Raquel Mendonça Martins analyzed the music video for the song “Vida Loka II”, by the group Racionais MCs, revealing the critical potential contained in its visual, musical and poetic elements. Rap is still mentioned in the article by Eduardo Vicente and Leonardo de Marchi that presents a historical overview of the music industry in Brazil. Finally, in the most recent edition of the journal, Ana Terra Santos Pompeu and Suamit Marques Barreiro discuss technical aspects of voice in rap.
