Abstract

This article analyzes the Afro-Catholic manifestation of the congado practiced in the southern region of the state of Minas Gerais, particularly in the city of Campanha. It seeks to discuss how the practice of congo is both a source of fun and a form of devotion. The research reveals that this manifestation celebrates a past event of the abolition of slavery while proclaiming the need to continue the struggle for black freedom in contemporary Brazil. In this sense, the “playfulness” of its Catholicism is configured as a cover that reduces the surveillance of the congo. So, the “mere joke” can be a powerful form of mobilization of the congadeiros in the struggle to assert their common aspirations.
