Abílio Manoel and the ola latino-americana in 1970s Brazil

Abstract

The artistic career of Abílio Manoel – a singer, composer, musical producer and broadcaster who died in 2010 – is confused with the maelstrom of political events that dominated Brazil between the end of the 1960s and the obscure decade of 1970s, whose winds have brought here the Latin American New Song. He starts his career as a composer and romantic singer, the committed nature of his work, in which we focus, it manifests in the mid- 1970s: his LP América Morena is from 1972; and from 1978 until 1982 he has produced and
propagated the program América do Sol in Bandeirantes radio. The present article, in the trail of the artistic career of Abílio Manoel, examines the place and the meanings attributed to the Latin American popular music in Brazil, especially the New Song, during the military dictatorship.
