Resumo
Desde inícios do período colonial as imagens presentes em diversos suportes como esculturas em pedra e cerâmica, códices (livros em formato de biombo produzidos antes e depois da chegada dos espanhóis) e tecidos foram utilizadas para conhecer a religião, sistemas calendários e histórias das diversas culturas que se desenvolveram e compartilharam tradições dentro da macrorregião cultural Mesoamérica. O início de estudos sistemáticos de iconografia da arte mesoamericana partilha, de maneira geral, da mesma herança filosófica daqueles aplicados na arte europeia. Surgem primeiro como ciência auxiliar nos estudos antiquários, para depois adquirir um caráter classificatório de acordo com certos temas e aspectos iconográficos.
