Abstract

This article presents new research about the Brazilian travels of the Victorian writer and amateur artist Marguerite Tollemache. During her time in Brazil in 1853–5, she produced drawings and watercolours depicting the landscapes of Rio de Janeiro and Petrópolis, now in the Instituto Moreira Salles. The article utilises a series of unpublished letters written by Marguerite and her
husband, William Augustus, in Brazil, and which contain references to the drawings in the IMS.
