Saul Steinberg and Brazil: his time in the country, publications and influence on Brazilian artists

Abstract

The article is devoted to the study of the work of Saul Steinberg (1914-1999) – Rumanian artist naturalized american and collaborator of the New Yorker magazine – with emphasis in the ties of his route and production with Brazil. It’s intention of this work contribute with the mapping of part of the brazilian graphic art history, having in mind Steinberg’s contribution to the work of some of the most important brazilian artists, specially the “Pasquim generation” cartoonists. The analysis of Steinberg’s drawings in this article takes in consideration the hypothesis of its modern particularity – based in graphic synthesis -, a fundamental aspect of the rupture carried out by the modern cartoon.
