Abstract

da Pintura antiga, by Francisco de Holanda (1517-1585), has drawn attention from art historians principally because of the Portuguese author’s Neoplatonism. Several of these scholars have argued that de Holanda’s Neoplatonism gives his writing a theoretical and speculative cast that was lacking among the Italian authors of the period and that the speculative element of the treatise is a result of the influence on de Holanda of Michelangel’s aesthetic theories. The article analyzes the critical literature on de Holanda’s Neoplatonism, and focuses on the poetics and rhetorical status of the genre of aesthetic theory, which underscores the connection between aesthetic theory and artistic practice. The genre thus appears to be a particularly useful instrument for the description of artistic creation in terms of the development of a critical vocabulary that provides criteria for both the making and the assessment of works of art.
