Abstract

The images of Sapho produced by Théodore Chassériau are certainly among the most representative of the female figure in his work. For this article, four images will be linked to other works of similar iconography. First, and perhaps the best known of these, the watercolor Sapho se précipitant dans la mer du rocher de Leucade, from 1846, followed by an engraving, a small oil painting and a drawing. This theme is particularly fertile in the 19th century, from Lamartine's poem to Gounod's opera, there are many recurrences in culture that are defined in the figure of the poet. Besides Chassériau, many artists have looked at the representation of Sapho. The objective of this study is therefore to analyze these images, always having as a starting point those of Théodore Chassériau.
