Abstract

In the 1950’s, Eugênio de Proença Sigaud is invited to paint the interior of the Catedral Diocesana de Jacarezinho – PR. Comissioned by his brother, then bishop in the locality, Dom Geraldo de Proença Sigaud. This meeting is, to say the least, striking. After all, the philosophical outlook of one was completely opposed to the other. Eugênio Sigaud, whilst communist and atheist, made from art his worldview; Dom Geraldo, on his side, belonged to the conservative wing of the Church and raised the anticommunist and antiagrarianreformist flag all along his clerical activity. From this paradoxical partnership resulted 600 m² of mural art in which we identify, for example, the figure of Karl Marx. Thus, we selected two panels of the Church to construct a narrative in this article about the daring brushstrokes of Eugênio Sigaud in Jacarezinho.
