The Lienzo, the Conquest and the women: an indigenous view of the feminine role in the Conquest of Mexico-Tenochtitlán

Abstract

This paper analyzes the presence (and absence) of female representations in the codex Lienzo de Tlaxcala in its visual narrative of the Conquest of Mexico-Tenochtitlán. With this purpose in mind, some vignettes from the document have been selected, in order to analyse the way in which women were portrayed and how this silence concerning the feminine points to the focus given by historiography, and not to a documental void, nor to an absence in the historical process. Thus, this article will seek to contribute to the writing of a more plural narrative that takes into account the
ethnic, political, social and gender diversity present during this process.
