Abstract

The relationship between ethnography, music and audiovisual media is marked by great interdependence. In many fieldwork situations, the presence of equipment capable of recording audio and video has made it possible to document musical practices, even when music was not at the center of the research project's concerns. In other cases, the very multisensoriality of these practices inspired the adoption of audiovisuals as a means of documentation, insofar as it made it possible to record not only the music in its sound form, but also the faces, bodies, voices and gestures of its practitioners, the way in which instruments were made and played, and the interactions and surroundings of a performance. This dossier aims to explore precisely these interdependencies and the relationship with multimodality, considered as a musical, multisensory and reflexive act of communication, which has marked a new context for research and exploration of methodologies in the fields of anthropology and ethnomusicology.
