Abstract
The article details Nelson Rodrigues' nasty theater project and Plínio Marcos' marginal characters in the light of a procedure used by both playwrights in their texts for the stage: street language. Through the analysis of certain critiques of the authors' plays, we highlight the functioning of legitimating instances and underline the role that street language assumes for their artistic validation. Through the apprehension of the idea of what is behind a theatrical success, we examine the meaning of marginality, both for an author who practically founded the Brazilian theatrical modernity, and for another who changed the map of the realist experiences until then performed on the country's stages.
