Abstract

In indigenous communities of the Zapotec ethnic group located in the southern part of Oaxaca, Mexico, the belief is preserved that the anima or spirit of the deceased travels to the town of Mitla, a place with pre-Hispanic antecedents located in the center of Oaxaca. Mitla is the place where the animas dwell and where family members also travel to maintain communication with the dead. However, during the 1st and 2nd of November, families prepare altars, food, drinks and music to welcome the souls, who come to visit for the festivity known as "Todos Santos". This festivity takes place year after year and reinforces the bonds between the living and the souls of their relatives.
