Abstract

The shields brought back by the French diplomat Charles Wiener in 1880 are devoid of precise information, apart from the words ‘Napo, Záparos Indians’. Four of them are currently held at the Musée du Quai Branly. A Zápara leader's visit to Paris introduced him to the museum's collection. Later, the presentation of photos of this visit to the Zápara organisation in Ecuador showed a different way of appreciating the image of these ancient objects. Through a discussion of the contemporary vision of ancient objects through photography, I suggest that current Zápara statements about ancestral shields mark a rediscovery of their culture, a questioning of who the Zápara are, and an assertion against oblivion.
