Abstract

In the Heroides, Ovid imagined Dejanira writing a letter to Hercules, her husband, shortly after hearing that he had conquered the kingdom of Ecalia and had fallen in love with Iole. Indignant about the allegedly case of adultery, Dejanira composes a text in which the greatest deeds of the hero are recapitulated not to exalt him, but to inveigh him. The rhetorical construction of her discourse, associated with the intertextual relationship established with the Metamorphoses, could lead the reader to recognize that, in fact, she is the real heroine of the story, as we intend to demonstrate in this article, based on our translation of the Ovidian poem.
