Abstract

This article aimed at discussing the experience of Unicamp Gymnastics Group (GGU), an university extension project of Faculty of Physical Education of University of Campinas (FEF-Unicamp) in force for over 30 years. From the theoretical framework by the German philosopher and sociologist Axel Honneth, this discussion aimed to emphasize the role of university extension based on the patterns of intersubjective recognition: love, rights, and solidarity. The case of the GGU reveals that university extension can become a place for promoting social recognition and sense of belonging. In addition, the pedagogical proposal used in this project has enabled a place for the gymnastics’ practice in a flexible and critical way, with an emphasis on the process, being a potential alternative with regard to the development of social skills and bonds and mutual recognition. Thus, this university extension action provides its participants an enriching body and social experience.
