Abstract
This article proposes some discussions about Luiz Marques’ interest in the 19th century, especially focused on the productions of the artists FélixÉmile Taunay and Nicolas-Antoine Taunay at specific moments in their careers in Brazil and France. Some texts published by Luiz Marques are included in these analyzes, including the one that introduces the catalog of the exhibition of his curatorship called 30 Masters of Painting in Brazil (2001), with emphasis on Félix-Émile Taunay, and the text Taunay, overcoming and death of the artist, present in the exhibition catalog Nicolas-Antoine Taunay, a reading of the tropics (2008). It is intended, therefore, to highlight the relevance of Luiz Marques as a teacher, researcher, curator and supervisor of these themes and his reflections on the two artists, where landscape painting in the 19th century occupies the center of the issue.
