The pastoral is possibly the most pervasive and resilient artistic and literary phenomenon in the History of Western Art and Aesthetics. Warmly welcomed in its time, Renaissance bucolic literature unfolded in various forms of representation, in a ripple effect that perpetuated the genre, although its intended artificiality is, to some extent, unsettling and impervious to our contemporary taste. Pointing to some of the fundamental stages of the genre’s constitution and highlighting aspects of its structure, we seek to point to the operative devices that allowed conflicting forces of the social life experienced in that period to be negotiated and elaborated dialectically in the scene of pastoral fiction.
2021-12-20T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2021 Deyse Cristina Brito Fabrício, Antonio Carlos Vitte https://econtents.bc.unicamp.br/inpec/index.php/figura/article/view/15620 Colonialism in the Cartouche: Imagery and Power in Early Modern Maps 2021-07-06T16:41:24+00:00 Chet Van Duzer chet.van.duzer@gmail.com
The role of maps as tools of colonial control is well known; the cartouches on maps are the places where the cartographer often signals to the viewer his or her interests or prejudices, but the colonialist messages conveyed by cartouches are underexplored. In this article I examine colonialist imagery in several cartouches from the end of the seventeenth to the early nineteenth century both to show the visual vocabulary of this colonialist discourse, and to stimulate further study of cartouches of this type.
2021-12-20T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2021 Chet Van Duzer https://econtents.bc.unicamp.br/inpec/index.php/figura/article/view/15648 As fronteiras do mundo conhecido 2021-06-29T18:52:25+00:00 Brenda Degger brendadegger@gmail.com
The representation of the continents as women during the 16th and early 17th centuries is considerably disseminated on maps, frontispieces, emblem books, tapestries and porcelain. Each woman is adorned and surrounded by characteristic elements that make its recognition possible. Asia, for example, is usually accompanied by a camel, carries spices and wears richly decorated garments. These attributes are sought in different image repertoires such as the Judeo-Christian tradition, travel accounts and Greco-Roman mythology. The recovery of classical antiquity myths in the artistic production of this period is recurrently addressed. Given some similarities between the personifications of America and the goddess of hunting, Artemis, such as the presence of bow and arrows, the hypothesis emerged that these images were related in the Renaissance context. Idea based on the notion presented by Jean-Pierre Vernant that Artemis was a deity located on the margins between civilization and barbarism, a position shared by America, a continent that was on the edge of the world known to Europeans. The aim of this article is to identify the possible links between America and Artemis based on the analysis of productions from the 16th and 17th centuries.

2021-12-20T00:00:00+00:00 Copyright (c) 2021 Leonardo Augusto Bora
