Abstract

Some chemical reactions can result in the formation of poorly soluble substances, generating the appearance of another phase in the reaction medium, such as a precipitate. Like the others, these reactions are governed by laws that describe chemical equilibria and show the possibility of the co-existence of simultaneous interactions. In fact, a simple change in the pH of a solution can induce, simultaneously, the formation (or dissolution) of precipitates, the formation of complexes and variations in the redox potentials of possible redox pairs that may be involved in the chemical system under observation, until a new equilibrium situation is reached. Since precipitation reactions are widely used in the separation and purification of substances and in gravimetry, one of the oldest techniques of quantitative analysis, it is important to introduce the reader to the phenomena involved in the formation of precipitates.
