Abstract

The Estremoz anticlinal landscape originated from the contrast between its agricultural and its industrial character, due to marble extraction, define this territory, and creates a wide room for reflection and action in the domain of art. In this context, the relation between landscape with sculpture and territory will be addressed, with focus on the negative constructions, the quarries as site and the sculptural objects as non site, as well as other artistic practices related to those places. The multiple functionalities and artistic opportunities of the palimpsest that forms the actual anticlinal landscape will also be evaluated. The author’s approach results from a view embedded by the territory, on a close and permanent cohabitation allowed by her experience as a sculptor, her living and teaching experience. Consequently, the history of a couple of events started two decades ago will be registered, which opens the discussion and reflexion on this territory’s issues regarding art and landscape.
