Abstract

Based on the premise that knowing the "South from the South" requires awareness of its immense diversity, the article discusses the musical exchanges established between Brazil and South Korea, based on the case of the South Korean bossa nova singer HeeKyung Na (Heena), in view of the new challenges and opportunities presented by studies on communication and music in a new global landscape that seems to be more multipolar and decentralized. In this way, we seek to give visibility to the "underground" musical exchanges made by contemporary musicians, with musical genres and sonorities of non-Western cultural matrices, which demonstrate different forms of cultural borrowing and musical appropriation among the countries of the non-imperial Global South.
