Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The contribution is original and unpublished, and is not being evaluated for publication by another journal; contrarily, this must be justified in "Comments to the editor".
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • URLs for the references must be informed whenever possible.
  • The text is in 1,5 spacing; size 12 font; uses italic instead of underlining (except for URL addresses); images and tables are inserted in the text, not at the end of the document in the form of attachments.
  • The text has up to 50 thousand characters without spaces, which results in about 20 pages.
  • The text follows the style standards and bibliographic requirements described in the section “Guidelines for Authors”.
  • In the case of submission to a peer-reviewed section (e.g. articles), the instructions available in the section “Assegurando a Avaliação por Pares Cega” have been followed.

Author Guidelines

Proa: Journal of Anthropology and Art receives contributions in a continuous flow from the following editorial lines: Anthropology and Sociology of Art, Visual Anthropology, Ethnomusicology, Ethnoesthetics, Art History, Cultural Heritage, Cultural Policies, Contemporary Artistic Practices, Performances and Rituals.

Contributions can be in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.

There is no fee for submitting contributions to the journal. Likewise, once approved, all material is shared freely and at no cost to readers and authors on our site. The following are submission guidelines:

Articles:

  • Articles must be unpublished and original, and cannot be evaluated by other journals.

  • They must contain a maximum of 50 mil characters, without spaces, excluding notes and bibliographic references (Times New Roman font, size 12, space 1.5).

  • The abstract must precede the text, with up to 800 characters, and three to five keywords, in addition to the title – all in Portuguese and English.

  • The Editorial Committee will judge whether the article corresponds to one of the journal's editorial lines. Upon being judged of interest, the article will be evaluated by two referees who are doctors and specialists in the subject, external to the committee and to the editorial board, and who will not have contact with the other opinion made on the same text. If the decision is conflicting, we send the text to a third opinion, to decide on publication. The names of reviewers and authors will be kept confidential throughout the evaluation process.

Visual (Audio) Rehearsals

  • Unpublished visual essays that dialogue with the editorial lines of the magazine will be accepted. It must contain a title and a presentation of up to 400 words.

  • Images: from 5 to 20 scanned images will be accepted per Essay, with subtitles, in .jpeg format with 300 dpis (pixels/inches) and a maximum of 5MB.

  • Video: the films (in high definition) must be hosted on the internet, with a private link, together with the text presentation.

  • The Editorial Committee will judge whether the essay corresponds to one of the editorial lines of the journal. Upon being judged of interest, the essay will be evaluated by two expert reviewers on the subject, who will not have contact with the other review made on the same essay. If the decision is conflicting, we send the essay to a third opinion, to decide on publication. The names of reviewers and authors will be kept confidential throughout the evaluation process.

Reviews

  • They must have a title and contain up to 8 mil characters, without spaces, including notes and bibliographic references (Times New Roman font, size 12, space 1.5)

  • We accept critical reviews of books, films, documentaries, exhibitions and events that are of anthropological and/or artistic interest.

  • The decision to publish the review will be the responsibility of the Editorial Committee.

Interviews

  • Must contain up to 40 mil characters without spaces, including notes and bibliography (Times New Roman font, size 12, space 1.5)

  • The interviews must be unpublished and focus on the journal's areas of interest.

  • The evaluation and decision on the publication of the interview will be the responsibility of the Editorial Committee

Dossiers

  • Calls with specific themes will be launched for this section, organized by the Editorial Committee or by guest professors, in the form of thematic dossiers.

  • All articles received for the dossier will go through the same parameters previously indicated for contributions in continuous flow, with submission to two external reviewers. If the decision is conflicting, the organizers of the dossier will decide on its publication.

Reports & Experiences

  • Reports of research and field experiences that dialogue with the editorial lines of the journal will be accepted.
  • They must contain up to 5 thousand words, including notes and bibliography (Times New Roman font, size 12, space 1.5)

  • The decision for publication will be the responsibility of the Editorial Committee.

Debates

  • In this section researchers are invited by the Editorial Committee to write articles that discuss a common theme.

Gallery

  • This section features contributions from artists invited by the Editorial Committee.

Magazine Artistic Project

  • The magazine will issue periodic calls for artistic projects in each volume. These calls can be general or with a specific theme.

  • The artistic project will concern the cover and illustrations of each section, in addition to the website and facebook headers.

  • The evaluation and decision on the artistic project chosen for each volume will be the responsibility of the Editorial Committee.

Rules for citations and references

  • The journal follows the ABNT standards in force, especially NBRs 6023, 6024, 6027, 6028, 10520 and 14724. The citation system used is the author-date.
  • Examples for normalizing references:

    BOOK - SURNAME, Name. Book title (bold): subtitle. Place of publication: publisher, year. [GELL, Alfred. Art and agency: an anthropological theory. São Paulo: Ubu, 2018.].
