Abstract

This article presents a proposal for the translation of three paradigmatic pieces of the Latin centos. However, for a more accurate analysis of these specific works, and, therefore, of all known pieces of the ars centonaria, a technique of poetic composition still not often studied among Lusophones, we intended to offer an introductory study which not only detailed its origins, but also to provide readers with subsidies for decoding the intertextuality which constitutes the centos. Therefore, modern semiotic theories were applied, by which the literary richness contained in these poems can be perceived and appreciated, a result of the intense dialogue with the classical heritage which motivated poetic creation during the Late Antiquity.
