Abstract

This article deals with ethical conduct in research involving Indigenous peoples. In recent decades, Indigenous territories have been the stage for many academic studies, especially anthropological ones. In this article, we ask how these codes are related to the Indigenous people’s ways of thinking and relating ethically and appropriately in research. Reflecting on our experiences in the Purus River region, states of Acre and Amazonas, as a member of an Indigenous people and a non-Indigenous person, we analyze how relationships are created, and can impact the established relationships in research. Our data were produced during collaborative research on the past and present of the Apurinã and Manxineru Indigenous peoples, who belong to the Arawak linguistic family. Drawing from the local principles of relating, we discuss how different beings, including humans and non-humans, interact, live together, and discuss, and how they should be recognized as different audiences of research. This article shows that local cultural protocols must be reflected together with the Official Codes of Ethical Conduct provided for the humanities and social sciences. In this way, ethical space created will become as a crucial instrument even more impactful for anyone wishing to carry out ethical research with Indigenous peoples.
