Abstract

Senility is marked by changes in cognition and memory. Chromosome 21 trisomy is known as Down Syndrome (DS) and is associated with premature aging and Alzheimer's Disease (AD), one of the main causes of death in this population. For the purpose of primary prevention of AD, five workshops were carried out through an interdisciplinary group of volunteer academic extensionists from the Pontifical Catholic University of Campinas (PUC-Campinas) in 2021 for the project of cognitive approaches in a group of 10 individuals with DS, users of the Foundation Down's syndrome.

Among the types of memory worked on in this dynamic, the Short Term or Primary Memory technique stood out and, more specifically, the working memory that consists of the temporary archiving of information for immediate use - the one most affected by the aging process as well as the Explicit or Declarative Long Term Memory of the Semantic type.

The study sought to stimulate a conscious remembrance of the terms addressed, requiring an intentional evocation of information, and also the memory of knowledge of the world. The workshops involving an interdisciplinary approach to the target audience were well tolerated and demonstrated the versatility of possible stimuli to preserve the cognitive.
