É uma grande satisfação apresentar ao público interessado em questões relacionadas ao desenvolvimento econômico o livro Produção de Commodities e Desenvolvimento Econômico, resultado de um trabalho conjunto entre a Universidade Estadual de Campinas e a Vale S.A. Além de outras atividades, desenvolvidas no âmbito de Convênio de Cooperação celebrado entre as duas instituições, bons frutos resultaram do Seminário Produção de Commodities e Desenvolvimento Econômico, promovido pelo Instituto de Economia da Unicamp, em São Paulo, no dia 29 de março de 2010, com o apoio da Vale, organização do jornal Brasil Econômico e divulgação da revista Carta Capital. Abrangendo diferentes temas e perspectivas sobre a produção de commodities e as transformações econômicas do Brasil, o Seminário contou com exposições e reflexões qualificadas que constituíram a base para a elaboração posterior de capítulos que compõem o Livro, escritos em meados de 2011 e revistos até meados de 2012. Desde então, outros capítulos foram acrescentados e possibilitaram o resultado final consubstanciado no Livro.
