Overlaps and equivocations between indigenous and traditional populations in the lower Rio Arapuins (Santarém/PA)

Abstract

This article discusses the overlap between the Indigenous Land Cobra Grande and Agroextractivist Project of the Lago Grande do Curuaí settlement (Santarém, Pará, Brazil). Around the year 2000, the formalization of these arrangements was permeated by a political split which divided the members of the fi ve communities located in the area in question. In recent years, these confl icts have given place to the construction of shared understandings and agreements. I argue that these disjunctions and rapprochements do not relate to failures to understand or to utilitarian distortions, but to differences in the worlds which are being seen by each other, when they activate different formal categories that define the belonging to "social groups".
