Reminiscences of the quilombos: territories of memory in a rural black community

Abstract

In times of disqualification of the claim for rights by quilombola communities in Brazil and Latin America, a work that emphasizes the creative dimension of memory is meritorious. In different parts of the African diaspora, black communities fight for the guarantee of ancestral territories. In these confrontations, the opposing strategies range from threats and actions of explicit violence directed at quilombolas to rhetorical constructions that devalue the oral dimension, a primordial platform for recording the trajectory of such communities, by questioning the legal-legal procedures for identification, recognition and regularization. of the territories of remnants of quilombo communities.
