Abstract
The article addresses financial mechanisms resorted to by rural inhabitants in Western Mexico to sustain their – generally precarious – livelihoods. Based on ethnographical information concerning shopkeepers and clients in rural areas, different forms of savings, debt and loans are discussed, emphasizing the relevance of the symbolic and social space surrounding such transactions. The main argument is that monies are transformed to adjust to a gamut of values and social relations wherein the attribution of identity plays a critical role.
