Abstract

The debate about new possibilities of development for rural areas was expanded in several countries during the 1990s. Overall, this discussion has pointed to the need for the implementation of development strategies to support pacts between different actors involved in the local sociopolitical network. This article presents a sociological interpretation of modern instances of political governance in rural areas – more specifically, the regional and municipal councils for rural development. Therefore, it will be presented a study case conducted in the municipality of Paranapanema, located in the southwestern of São Paulo state. The main issue to be investigated will be the presence of forms of symbolic and material domination of social space inside decentralized instances of socioterritorial governance.
