Abstract
At the end of 2004, Brazil lost one of its most lucid critics: economist Celso Furtado. A tireless worker, his brilliant syntheses on the issue of underdevelopment guided practically all debates in the second half of the 20th century on the dilemmas of economic formation. Whether or not you agree with his theses, it is impossible to understand modern Brazil without dialoguing with his creative theoretical and historical interpretations.
