Abstract
The book reviewed is the result of sociological research developed by Décio Saes and guided by the following problem: “which social group directs the formation of public schools in the transition to capitalism?”. The methodological path chosen is comparative sociology in education, establishing similarities and differences between two specific cases: the French (1880-1940) and the Brazilian (1889-1940).
