Abstract

The term soundscape, coined by Murray Schafer (1977), translated as “soundscape”, has been the subject of several researches from the 70s to the present day. With the advent of virtual media, this term was appropriated in several ways, meaning different objects of study, sometimes contradictory to each other. With this in mind, within the category of games, we propose the use of the term “sonic environment” as an alternative term to “soundscape”, to refer to the group of sounds whose function is to display diegetic sounds in the virtual world, thus avoiding possible ambiguities in communication.
