Abstract

Due to the high mumps transmissibility, outbreaks of the disease keep occurring. It is believed that these outbreaks occur by virus adaptation, heterogeneous accination coverages and vaccination failures. The estimated virus attack rate in non-vaccinated people is 10 times higher than on people vaccinated with two doses. The introduction of two vaccination doses in Brazil occurred from 2004; therefore, many young people have only one vaccine dose, which increases the number of susceptible people. Describe the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of mumps cases occurred at UNICAMP during 2015 and 2016 and suggest strategies to prevent new outbreaks. The study was performed using mumps notification data in the period from August/2015 to June/2016 obtained at CECOM. 90 mumps cases were notified. 54.5% of cases were female; 80% of people infected were students, the age range between 16 and 25 years old concentrated 71% of the cases. The previous vaccination situation was assessed in 45 cases: 5 did not receive the vaccination, 23 had 1 dose, and 17 had two doses. In places where there is people interaction without previous contact with the mumps virus and with low vaccination coverage, there are outbreak risks. CECOM set up that students from the health department courses must update the vaccination card when entering, which proven to be in high regard during this outbreak, since only 3 disease cases occurred among these students. This conduct will be extended to all UNICAMP students.
