Psychology action on the oncology field at Hospital da Mulher Prof. Dr. José Aristodemo Pinotti - CAISM/UNICAMP

Abstract

The psychologist acting on the Oncology field has multiple tasks, among them, helping the patient and relatives' psychologic demand. The purpose is to understand and re-signify illness, prevent and reduce emotional and physical symptoms, caused by the cancer and its treatment and receive the family's emerging feelings, providing a therapeutic listening space. This work's purpose is to describe the action of the Psychology Section on the Oncology Area at Hospital da Mulher Prof. Dr. José Aristodemo Pinotti – CAISM/UNICAMP, in the last five years. The Psychology acts on the Oncology area, serving women from the public health system (SUS) with diagnosis of breast and gynecological cancer. The team is made up by a hired psychologist and two trainee psychologists. The psychological services occur on the ambulatories, at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and wards (Clinical Oncology Ward and Surgical Oncology Ward), through multi-professional team referrals, spontaneous patient and/or relative demand and active service search by institutional protocols. The Psychology service automatically calculates the number of psychological services performed on the Oncology area. In the last five years, a total 14,000 psychological services were recorded, encompassing the psychologist's action on wards and ambulatories in this hospital. We conclude that the psychologist's work on the Oncology area is extremely important for patients and relatives, since he/she acts as an enabler in the relationship between patient/family/team and helps on the prevention and treatment of psychic symptoms resulting from cancer.
