Abstract

In pediatric intensive care units, the choice of type of venous catheter is a challenge in the care practice, considering the divergences of opinions between nurses and physicians regarding the choice of type of venous access. The objectives of this study are to characterize the clinical evolution of infants with bronchiolitis and to evaluate the compatibility of medications administered during hospitalization. Descriptive study in a pediatric intensive care unit with children up to two years and diagnosis of bronchiolitis. Data collection is being performed in the period of highest incidence of the disease. The results will be analyzed through descriptive statistics and drug compatibility through Micromedex Medication Management. Thirty-six cases were included up to August 2016. The mean age was 4.26 months, most males, 94% were discharged from the unit and 6% died. All infants received basal serum, 64% sedation, 36% vasoactive drugs, 72% antibiotics and 15% blood components. Regarding venous access, 79% had peripheral venous access, 63% had central venous catheter and 48% more than one type of access. The number of venous access routes compromise the safety of administration of drugs in pediatric intensive care units. The drugs used are administered in continuous infusions and for administration simultaneously it is necessary to evaluate the compatibility between these drugs. Infants with bronchiolitis require central venous access with at least two routes for infusion of the drugs. Drug compatibility will be tested in the second stage of the study.
