RELATÓRIO DE PESQUISA
Os familiares de Nengua Dia Nkisi Dango Hongolo Menha (Mãe Dango de
Hongolo - Eunice de Souza) que chegaram num dos últimos navios negreiros a aportar na Bahia,
eram bantos. De seus ascendentes, seu pai, Antonio de Souza, sobrenome português adotado
posteriormente, deixou um forte legado para ela, era um profundo conhecedor das ervas, um
benzedor num contexto em que o candomblé sofria muitas perseguições. Por meio de sua Madrinha
Maria Santos de Lima, iniciou-se na umbanda e em 1978, Eunice Souza dirige a Tenda de Umbanda
Cabocla Jurema de Tawamin, já estabelecida em Hortolândia, depois de ter vivido em Belo
Horizonte e Campinas. Em 1984, Mãe Eunice iniciou-se no candomblé, tornando-se, então, Mãe
Dango de Hongolo, filha de Mam'etu Munukaia de Kafundeji, de Mongaguá - SP, cujas raízes são
do candomblé de Nação Angola de Joãozinho da Goméia

Mãe Dango tornou-se não apenas uma líder espiritual, mas também comunitária, inquieta
em relação às questões sociais que a cerca, teve e tem profunda ligação com seu bairro e com a
cidade de Hortolândia, o que a projetou para a região metropolitana de Campinas como uma figura
de destaque. Desde 1985, ao lado de Mãe Corajacy, organiza a Lavagem das Escadarias da Catedral
de Campinas, algo visto no Brasil, na mesma dimensão, somente em Salvador, com a Lavagem do
Bomfim. É o grande momento de consagração, resistência e visibilidade da cultura banto na cidade
de Campinas.
Há escassas referências audiovisuais sobre o candomblé banto no cinema e na televisão
brasileiros. Assim como acontece no âmbito do imaginário religioso, também o audiovisual
reproduz com mais frequência os referenciais da cultura jeje-nagô. Assim, no contexto do
documentário, filmes tais como Iaô (1973), de Geraldo Sarno, Egungun (1982), de Carlos
João Alves de Torres Filho ou Joãozinho da Goméia, também conhecido por Tata Londirá, era sacerdote do
Candomblé de caboclo (Angola), nasceu em 27 de Março de 1914, na Bahia e morreu em 19 de Março de 1971 em
São Paulo. Joãozinho da Goméia chamava a atenção de pesquisadores famosos da época, como o baiano Edison
Carneiro e a americana Ruth Landes, ganhando prestígio rapidamente e despertando polêmicas. Era um homem jovem,
numa cultura religiosa dominada por velhas senhoras. Aos 21 anos, ele tinha seu próprio terreiro e havia formado
várias filhas-de-santo, a maioria bem mais velha do que ele. Joãozinho da Goméia foi o grande responsável pela
expansão do candomblé no Sudeste do país, a partir da década de 1950. Ele formou milhares de filhos-de-santo, que
criaram novos terreiros em São Paulo e no Rio de Janeiro. Essas casas de candomblé apresentam-se orgulhosamente,
ainda hoje, como fazendo parte do "modelo Goméia", ou da "raiz Goméia".
