Abstract

Anton Heinrich Springer (1825-1891) is one of the most important actors in the development of art history as an academic discipline in German universities during the 19th century. His intellectual production, which went through journalism, political history and political activism, bore its most beautiful fruits in the field of historical-artistic studies. Author of introductory works, iconographic studies, and artistic biographies, Anton Springer was also an occupant of important chairs of art history and acted directly in the founding of the historical-artistic institutes of Strasbourg and Leipzig. Despite his importance to the history of the discipline, his name is rarely remembered. This article, therefore, intends to highlight the role of this historian in the foundation and in the theoretical-methodological debate of the discipline, presenting to the Brazilian reader the translation of “connoisseurs and art historians”, an essay published in 1881, in which Springer observes the transformations in the artistic world and clearly expounds his theoretical perspectives on the nascent discipline of art history.
